What you would NOT be paying for?

What you would not see on SG Girls are photos that are deemed as inappropriate content, which includes:

- Slutty, sleazy images
- Low quality photos eg. webcam captures
- Photos that do not feature Singapore or girl/woman

Words from the developer

If you have bought SG Girls, I thank you for your support. The app is still at its early stage, and there could be features/improvements/photos/bugs which you think should have or not have.

Interestingly, the release date for SG Girls is 5th December 2008, but, it was not till 29th January 2009 that it appears in App Store! So what happened in the 2 months? Apple was evaluating SG Girls. It was an unusually long review, and I thought Apple is gonna reject it. As such, I did not touch this project for a while.

Now, I can promise that updates and improvements would be lined up for SG Girls, and new photos would be constantly added! I have developed plenty of apps, but SG Girls need special care, since this is my first paid app, and first app released to the world outside Singapore!

Lastly, I believe SG Girls is what many guys, and also ladies, would like. Ladies like to look at ladies too, if you do not yet know (:

What really are mission statements?

The day-to-day operations of a business is a state of controlled chaos.

Anyone who works in a company/corporation should recognize the fact - rushing to meet datelines, continuous piling up of requests, constraints in time and resources, etc.. While we are constantly working in this 'chaos', we must also have a sense of direction. This direction serves not only to keep us moving towards our objectives, but also serves to motivate us when we are lost.

So how do we find this direction?

Every company has a mission statement. Taking Singtel as an example: "We enable communication by breaking barriers and building bonds. We help businesses and people communicate anytime, anywhere and in many ways. We make communications easier, faster, more economical and reliable by ..." That is a kind of direction, but a company's mission statement is more like a smoke screen! They are feel-good mottos developed for only the public! We can even generate with a Mission Generator.

What a company really needs are working mission statements. Working mission statements are clear and meaningful statements, which employees are able to digest and commit to memory easily. Different teams/employees would have different working mission statements that sum up their job activities.

But a working mission is still not enough. To completely define our direction, we need to have a one page Operating Charter, which contains our working mission, primary objectives, secondary objectives, aspirations, quantifiable measures of success and constraints. This is a guide line for a one page Operating Charter:

  • Working Mission: List two or three ideas that sum up your job activities + One core principle + Who you are helping
  • Scope: Defines the parameters in which you work. Be it a particular domain, technology, product or country you work in.
  • Primary Objectives: List no more than six clearly stated roles. This includes primary job responsibilities, areas where you lead and areas where you assist.
  • Secondary Objectives: List no more than two other clearly stated roles that are hoped for, but not mandatory.
  • Aspirations: List no more than three dreams.
  • Quantifiable measures of success: Means you will use to track whether or not you are accomplishing what you set out to do.
  • Constraints: List external factors you cannot control which could have a negative impact on the stated objectives.

Your Operating Charter must be written in one page, and is preferably pinned up on your wall. Operating Charter is flexible and is applicable to a team or to an individual employee.

This post is what I have learnt from the first chapter in The Marketing Game by Eric Schuiz.

SG Blood - A blood donation app

SGBloodSG Blood is an iPhone application that I have developed for regular or new blood donors.

I had this idea of developing blood donation app when I know about the Nuffnang blood donation drive. I did not participate in the bloggers blood donation, but I did feel how heart warming it is when a community set out to do something good.

I hope iPhone community can achieve a similar feat.

Lastly, you might not like certain ways the app works. But there is only one objective for the app:

Give blood and give life (:

More about the App:

SG Blood provides the calendar for Bloodmobile events, giving donors the convenient of planning where and when they want to contribute. The details for the 2 permanent blood donation centres - HSA and NUH - are also available within the app. A simple FAQ also helps to address the questions that new donors would like to know.

Features include:
- Calendar for Bloodmobile events
- Show on Google map the location of a Bloodmobile event
- Record the date of the last donation
- Display info, address, map and phone numbers of the 2 blood donation centres (HSA and NUH)
- FAQ for new donors

iPhone as a Touchpad

I always wanted to use my iPhone/iPod Touch as my MacBook's touchpad, but did not attempt to setup one despite knowing about such apps since iPhone 1.x apps days.

But I felt my wrist pretty aching this morning, and decided to make better use of my iPhone, once again. I downloaded RemotePad, which is free.
There are other paid apps such as WiFi Touchpad and Touchpad Elite.

After running the app, I realized that I need to download a server for my Mac for it to work. The full instructions can be found on their website. After downloading the RemotePad Server and running it on my Mac, I tried again.

The Bonjour connection between Mac and iPhone did not work well. I tried a few times before my Mac appears in the iPhone's list of servers. If anyone experienced the same problem, try running the app first, then the server.

But when the connection is established, the experience is good (but many improvements are possible). I am happy as long as I get to control my Mac with my hands under the table! This is an anti-RSI app!
